A General Look At The World’s Most Populous Countries

The two largest countries in the world are China and India, which both have a population of over 1 million people. The United States is the third largest country in the world, but it comes in far behind India and China, with a population of over 325 million people. Brazil, Russia, India, and China are often referred to as the BRIC countries, countries that are rapidly expanding and are expected to become major powers in the 21st century. The massive size of the population of these four countries is likely tied with their economic expansion.

Many of the countries considered developing countries by the International Monetary Fund, those which have not managed to achieve high degrees of industrialization in relation to the size of their population, are also amongst the most populous nations in the world. Nigeria is home to around 190 million people, Bangladesh has a population of around 165 million people, and Mexico has a population of around 129 million people. The expanding size of these countries is in contrast to the populations of the countries with the strongest economies. The countries which have the largest economies in the world include Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Italy has a population of around 60 million people and Germany has a population of around 82 million.

China is the most populous country on the planet, with a population of around 1.386 billion people in 2019. China is also one of the largest countries in the world when it comes to land area, with an area of around 3.705 million square miles. China’s population growth is approximately 0.46%. China’s predominant language is Standard Mandarin, but there are over 292 living languages in the country. China has seen massive urbanization over the course of the past few decades. The percentage of China’s population living in an urban area was 20% in 1980, but it is now over 55%. The Chinese government recognizes around 56 distinct ethnic groups, but the largest of all these groups is the Han Chinese, and they make up around 91.51% of the population. Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group in the entire world.

India

India is the second most populous country in the world, with a population of around 1,324,000 people. In terms of land area, India’s borders stretch around 3,287,263 square kilometers. India is growing substantially, although its rate of growth has declined since the 1990s. From 1990 to 2001 the growth rate of India was around 21.54%, compared to 17.64% from 2001 to 2011. Life expectancy in the country is around 68 years. India has urbanized rapidly over the course of the past two decades, with the level of urbanization around 31.16% in 2011. The country of India has no official language, but there are two dominant languages in the country. The Indo-Aryan language family is spoken by around 74% of the population and the Dravidian language family is spoken by around 24%.

The United States of America is home to around 327 million people, making it the third largest country in the world, though coming in some margin behind India and China. In terms of its size, the area of the country is around 3,796,000 square miles or 9,830,000 square kilometers. The nation’s growth rate is around 6.0%. The population of the United States is extremely diverse, with many different ethnic groups found in the country. The biggest cities in the United States are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Washington D.C. The United States doesn’t have an official language, but the de facto national language is English. Spanish is spoken by around 12% of the population, making it the second most commonly spoken language in the country.

The fourth most populous nation in the world is Indonesia, which has a population of around 264 million people. Indonesia is found in Southeast Asia, and it spread out over many different islands. When the area of the islands is added up the total land area is around 1,904,000 square kilometers. Indonesia has a fairly high level of population growth at around 1.9%. The most populated island in Indonesia is the island of Java, which is home to around 58% of the entire population of the country. The population of Indonesia is expected to grow to around 320 million people by 2050. Indonesia is an extremely diverse country, with almost 300 different native ethnic groups calling the country home. The largest ethnic group are the Javanese, who make up around 40.2% of the population. The official language of Indonesia is Indonesian, but there are also over 700 local languages spoken by citizens of the country.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world by population, with population of approximately 208 million people. Brazil’s most populated city is Sao Paulo, and it is also the country’s capital. Brazil’s total area is around 8,515,000 square kilometers or about 3,288,000 square miles, and around 7,491 kilometers of this area is coastline. Brazil is a heavily urbanized country, with around 84% of its population living in cities. The population is mainly centered in the southeastern region of the country. The nation’s official language is Portuguese, but the population of the country also speaks around 210 other languages, with 180 of these languages being indigenous. The most populous cities in Brazil are Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife, and Brasilia.

Pakistan is a country found in South Asia, and with a population of around 212,743,000 people, it is the sixth most populated country on Earth. In terms of the land area it is the 33rd largest country, with a region of around 340,000 square miles (or 880,00 square kilometers) within its borders. The country has a growth rate of around 1.45%. The country’s official language is Urdu, but it is the primary language of only about 8% of Pakistan’s population. Urdu serves as the main method of communication between different language groups, as around 75% of people within Pakistan speak the language. Punjabi is the primary language with around 44.2% of Pakistan’s population. The most populous cities in Pakistan include Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria is located in West Africa, bordered by the other African countries of Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. Nigeria’s population is around 199,789,000 people, making it the seventh largest country in the world in terms of population. The country’s area is around 923,00 square kilometers or about 357,000 square miles. Nigeria’s population has grown dramatically over the past few decades, seeing a 60% growth rate from 1990 to 2008. It is estimated that around 48.3% of the country’s population lives in urban areas while 51.7% of the country lives in rural areas. Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups, with the largest groups being Fulani, Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. It is thought that there around 500 languages spoken in Nigeria. The country’s official language is English, but there are also many native languages spoken by large groups of people including Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo.

Bangladesh

The People’s Republic of Bangladesh is in South Asia, bordered by Myanmar and India. With a population of around 164,000,000 people, the country is the world’s eighth most populous country. The total area of Bangladesh is around 147,500 square kilometers or 56,900 square miles. The total fertility rate of Bangladesh is about 2.55. Bangladesh’s most populous cities are Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, and Rajshahi. Around 98% of the population are Bengalis. The main language of Bangladesh is Bengali, spoken by 98% of the population. Despite this, English is often used for official communications.

Russia

The Russian Federation is the world’s ninth most populous country with population of around 146.77 million people. Russia is also the world’s largest country in terms of land area, with an area of about 17,125,200 square kilometers or about 6,612,000 square miles. Eighty-one percent of the country’s population is ethnic Russian, but there are about 160 different ethnic groups living within Russia’s borders. Because of Russia’s massive size its population density is fairly low. Most of Russia’s population lives in urban areas, around 73% of the country’s population. The largest cities within Russia are Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, and Nizhny Novgorod.

Mexico

Mexico is home to around 126,577,000 people, and it has an area of around 1,972,500 square kilometers (or 761,000 square miles). Mexico’s rate of population growth is around 1.70% per year. Mexico’s most populous cities are Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, and Toluca. While Spanish is the de facto national language of the country, there are at least 68 different linguistic groups recognized by the federal government. Approximately 8.3 million people speak one of the languages belonging to these groups.
